Comedy Review: JIMMY CARR: THE BEST OF, ULTIMATE, GOLD, GREATEST HITS TOUR – The Lowry, Salford

JIMMY CARR: THE BEST OF, ULTIMATE, GOLD, GREATEST HITS TOUR

It’s hard to believe that Jimmy Carr has been on the stand-up scene for a decade and a half. In the course of his career, the English comedian, best known as the host of TV panel show 8 OUT OF 10 CATS, has performed nine sell-out tours to over two million people across four continents. And as you can imagine, he’s built up a pretty extensive repertoire of jokes in that time.

THE BEST OF, ULTIMATE, GOLD, GREATEST HITS TOUR sees Carr return to the stage to perform some of his best material in one show. The new two-hour show features a selection of Carr’s funniest jokes from the last 15 years alongside some brand new material.

The witty one-liners start before Carr even arrives on stage with a large screen towards the back of the stage flashing up jokes to warm up the audience. When Carr finally does take to the stage, the jokes come fast and furious covering everything from the American presidential race, to teachers, sex, relationships and immigration.

Carr’s act is all about the jokes and the word play and some of his jokes have an intentional dark edge. The comedian is famous for pushing the boundaries and offending just about every group of society imaginable but this is why his fans love him. Shock is the name of the game for Carr and he certainly doesn’t disappoint. A few jokes about disability, rape and child abuse cut close to the bone but Carr reveals in it. The comedian thrives on making the audience laugh one minute, then take a sharp intake of breath the next. Yet despite the rudeness of some of the material, there’s an underlying class to Carr’s material. His act is polished, fearlessly tasteless and consistently funny.

Audience participation also forms a major part of the performance with the acid-tongued comic moving effortlessly from scripted material to off-the-cuff interaction with the crowd. A conversation with a tax adviser sat on the front row made for some witty gags about Carr’s well-publicised tax avoidance, while four hecklers from Norway added to the entertainment when Carr responded in his predictably scathing fashion.

But the best comedy is when Carr invites the audience to text him their jokes and questions, a sketch which works so well in his Netflix show FUNNY BUSINESS. The content flashes up on a giant screen as Carr responds to the witty one-liners and comical questions with his usual quick wit and matter-of-fact style.

Carr is on top form with THE BEST OF, ULTIMATE, GOLD, GREATEST HITS TOUR, proving once again that he is one of the finest comedians of his generation. An entertaining trip down memory lane and an absolute master class of comedy.
